What lyophilization actually is
Lyophilization is freeze-drying. The peptide solution is frozen, a deep vacuum is applied, and the ice is removed by sublimation, passing directly from solid to vapor without ever melting. What remains is the peptide itself, dried into a porous cake or fine powder with almost no residual moisture.
The process is gentle by design. Because the water leaves at low temperature, the peptide is never exposed to the heat that would degrade it in conventional drying.
Why not just ship it in solution
Peptides in solution are on the clock. The published stability literature documents several degradation routes that run continuously in water: hydrolysis of the peptide backbone, oxidation of sensitive residues, deamidation, and aggregation. Each of these processes chips away at the fraction of intact peptide in the vial.
Freeze-drying removes the water those reactions depend on. A lyophilized peptide, sealed and stored properly, remains chemically stable for far longer than the same compound dissolved in a buffer. That stability is what allows a compound to be synthesized, tested by a third-party laboratory, shipped across the country, and still match its certificate when it arrives.

Lyophilization and lot-level testing work together. Because the freeze-dried compound is stable, the third-party certificate issued for a lot remains meaningful for the life of that lot.
